British man admits hitting bali officer with bottle lawyer says his attack has prompted a public inquiry into claims he punched and kicked a police officer.
A 20-year-old man pleaded guilty at Newcastle Magistrates Court to assaulting a public servant when he was arrested in May 2015.
His father said in court: 'I want to tell you that this man will never be forgiven for his actions. He didn't have his hands up when he was doing it.'
But police officer Peter Brown QC told the court his colleague, who was 'in a state of shock' when the attack happened, was 'not likely to react'.
On Monday, the judge allowed the case to go ahead and ordered a three-month public inquiry into the assault.
The defence claimed the man had been drinking at the nightclub but claimed he did not intend to hurt the officer but rather had become intoxicated and wanted to drink to celebrate.
On the day his trial was due to begin in January 2016, court was told that the 20-year-old was drinking on a night out with friends at The Warehouse nightclub.
But in his final statement at Newcastle Crown Court, his father said he was a student studying to become a nurse when he was arrested by officers at The Warehouse nightclub after being found unconscious on May 29, 2015.
His father said: 'They had his phone, had heard his phone ringing and, when they were there, they decided this was not in the best interest of his case, and released him.
'There were people standing behind them who were very drunk and some had taken drinks from other people to take.
'There were lots of women and men there at the time and they could not believe the extent of his drinking.
'But he wasn't going to get into trouble by any stretch of the imagination - he was going to be arrested for having a cup of something that may be drink and the officer who was standing there decided, with no question of him having meant to hurt the officer in any way, he was going to arrest him for something that was out of his control.
'He went down into the drink and they took his drink.'
The father added that during the arrest, Mr Brown told officers: 'I will get you if you are going to arrest me.'
The incident came just three days after a man punched and kicked a man with cerebral palsy in central Newcastle.
Police later charged former police officer Christopher Jardine with this attack, and have now said Mr Brown 'was never seen or heard from again during that attack'.
The teenager is set to be formally charged with the alleged attack of police officer Peter Brown when his trial opens on January 15.
